MetaTrader 4 Troubleshooting and Error Help

Use this MT4 support section to troubleshoot specific error messages and failure states. Start with the exact symptom shown in the terminal—Invalid Account, No Connection, Waiting for Update, Off Quotes, Invalid Stops, Trade is disabled, Market is closed, Not enough money, Requote, Trade Context Busy or an EA that is loaded but not trading.

MT4 Installation and Startup Problems

If MetaTrader 4 will not install, launch or stay open, separate the problem from account login first. Check the installer, operating-system permissions, security software, storage and whether the installed terminal build can still connect to the broker environment.

Install and startup

Identify whether MT4 fails during install, launch or connection

A setup file that will not run is different from a terminal that opens but cannot connect. Check which stage actually fails before reinstalling, changing account details or troubleshooting the trading server.

Why will MetaTrader 4 not install?

Check that the installer matches the operating system, the download completed correctly, enough storage is available and security controls are not blocking the file. On desktop, also check user permissions before running the installer again.

Why does the MT4 installer open and then fail?

An incomplete package, restricted write permissions, security software or a damaged previous installation can stop setup after it starts. Recheck the installation file and device permissions before repeating the same install attempt.

Why does MetaTrader 4 not open after installation?

If MT4 is installed but will not launch, check whether the application is being blocked or quarantined, whether the installation completed fully and whether the operating system can run the installed build. Reinstall only after checking these conditions.

Can an old MT4 build stop connecting to broker servers?

Yes. MetaTrader 4 has raised its minimum supported terminal build in past updates, and older terminals may no longer connect to updated broker servers. If a previously working terminal suddenly cannot connect, confirm that the installed build is current.

Invalid Account, No Connection and Server Errors

MT4 login and connection failures usually come from the account number, password, server name, account status, terminal build or network path. Treat Invalid Account, No Connection and a missing server as separate symptoms because they point to different checks.

Login and server

Match the login, password and trading server exactly

A valid MT4 login needs the correct account number, one valid password and the matching trading server. A correct password with the wrong server can still fail, and an account that has been disabled by the provider cannot be restored from terminal settings.

What does Invalid Account mean in MT4?

Invalid Account means the trading server did not accept the account login. Recheck the account number, password and exact server name. If the details are correct, confirm with the account provider that the account is still active.

What does No Connection mean in MetaTrader 4?

No Connection means the terminal is not connected to the trade server. Check the internet connection, selected server, terminal build and whether the server is reachable. If other accounts connect but one does not, verify that account’s server details.

Why can’t MT4 find my broker server?

A server can be missing because the wrong name is being searched, the terminal server list is outdated or network access is blocked. Use the exact server name supplied with the account; broker names and server names are not always identical.

Why does MT4 still reject a correct password?

Authentication also depends on the account number and server. A live account connected to a demo server, a disabled account or an investor-password login used for the wrong task can appear like a password problem even when the password itself is valid.

Account Disabled, Read-Only Access and Trading Permissions

Some MT4 problems occur after login succeeds. Account Disabled, investor-password access, missing trading permissions and server-side restrictions can leave quotes or account data visible while preventing normal trading.

What does Account Disabled mean in MT4?

Account Disabled is a server-side account status. The terminal cannot reactivate the account. Confirm that the correct server is selected, then contact the account provider if the account should still be active.

Why can I log in to MT4 but not place trades?

A successful login does not guarantee trading permission. The account may be connected with an investor password, trading may be disabled for the account or symbol, or the server may restrict the requested operation.

What happens if I log in with the MT4 investor password?

Investor access is read-only. It can be used to view account data, charts and history, but it does not allow trading. Expert Advisors also cannot place trades while the account is authorized with investor access.

Why are some symbols visible but not tradable?

A symbol can be displayed while trading is restricted by account permissions, market session, symbol settings or broker-side rules. Check whether the symbol is open for trading and whether the active account is allowed to trade it.

Invalid Stops, Market Closed, Trade Disabled and Margin Errors

MT4 trade-server return codes identify why an order request was rejected. Common messages include Invalid Stops, Invalid Trade Volume, Market is closed, Trade is disabled, Not enough money, Off Quotes and Requote.

What does Invalid Stops mean in MT4?

Invalid Stops means the requested Stop Loss, Take Profit or pending-order price does not meet the symbol’s allowed distance or price rules. Recheck the current market price and the minimum stop level before sending the order again.

What does Market is closed mean in MT4?

Market is closed means the server is not accepting trades for that symbol at that time. Check the instrument’s trading session and any holiday or rollover restrictions before retrying.

What does Trade is disabled mean in MT4?

Trade is disabled means trading is not permitted for the requested account, symbol or server condition. The terminal cannot override a server-side restriction, so check account permissions and the symbol’s trading status.

What does Not enough money mean in MT4?

Not enough money means the account does not have sufficient free margin for the requested trade under the current leverage, volume and margin rules. Reduce the requested exposure or review the account’s available margin.

Waiting for Update, Frozen Charts and Missing History

A chart that shows Waiting for Update, stops moving or loads incomplete history is usually a data or connection problem before it is an indicator problem. Check server connection, symbol availability and history synchronization first.

What does Waiting for Update mean on an MT4 chart?

Waiting for Update means the chart has not received enough price data for the selected symbol. Confirm the terminal is connected, make sure the symbol is available in Market Watch and reopen the chart after quotes begin arriving.

Why is my MT4 chart not moving?

If the chart is frozen, first check whether new Bid and Ask quotes are arriving for the symbol. A closed market, lost server connection or unavailable symbol can leave the chart unchanged even though the terminal itself is open.

Why is MT4 price history incomplete?

History can be incomplete when the terminal has not yet downloaded all available bars for the symbol and timeframe. Keep the account connected, confirm the symbol is active and allow time for history to synchronize.

Why does an MT4 indicator show nothing on the chart?

An indicator can fail to display if the chart has insufficient history, the indicator parameters are invalid or the custom indicator did not load correctly. Confirm the base chart is receiving data before troubleshooting the indicator itself.

EA Not Trading, AutoTrading and Trade Context Errors

An EA can be attached to a chart and still place no trades. Check AutoTrading, EA-level permissions, account authorization, symbol status, strategy conditions, terminal connection and the Experts or Journal messages before assuming the EA code has failed.

Why is my MT4 EA loaded but not trading?

Confirm that AutoTrading is enabled, Allow live trading is permitted for the EA, the account is not logged in with investor access and the symbol can be traded. Then check whether the EA’s own entry conditions have actually been triggered.

Why is AutoTrading enabled but the EA still cannot trade?

The toolbar switch is only one permission layer. The EA properties must also allow live trading, and the account or server must permit Expert Advisor trading. A server-side restriction cannot be overridden by the terminal button.

What does Trade Context Busy mean in MT4?

Trade Context Busy means another trade operation is already using the terminal’s trading context. An EA or script should avoid sending overlapping trade requests and wait until the current trade operation has completed.

Why does an EA show Trade is not allowed?

Trade is not allowed can appear when live trading permission is disabled for the EA or automated trading is restricted by the account or server. Check both terminal-level and EA-level permissions, then review the Experts and Journal logs.

MT4 Mobile Login and Connection Problems

Mobile problems most often involve the same account and server details used on desktop. Invalid Account, a missing server, no quotes and connection failures should be checked against the exact mobile login environment before reinstalling the app.

Why does MT4 mobile show Invalid Account?

Recheck the account number, password and exact server selected in the mobile app. If the same credentials work on desktop, compare the server name character by character and confirm the account has not been disabled.

Why can’t I find my broker server in MT4 mobile?

Search for the exact server name supplied with the account, not only the broker brand. If the server still does not appear, confirm the server name with the account provider and make sure the mobile app is current.

Why does MT4 mobile connect but show no quotes?

A connected account can still have no active quotes if the symbol is unavailable, the market is closed or the server is not supplying prices for that instrument. Check another symbol and compare the account status with desktop.

What should I do if the MT4 mobile app will not open?

Check the device operating system, available storage and app version first. If the app closes before login, treat it as a device or installation issue rather than an account-server problem.

Off Quotes, Requote and Server-Side Trade Errors

Some MT4 errors happen after a valid trade request reaches the server. Off Quotes, Requote, Price changed, Trade timeout and Broker is busy describe pricing or server conditions rather than chart-analysis or strategy errors.

What does Off Quotes mean in MT4?

Off Quotes means the server cannot provide an executable price for the request at that moment. Check the connection and current quotes, then retry only after fresh prices are available.

What does Requote mean in MetaTrader 4?

Requote means the price changed while the trade request was being prepared or processed and the server returned a new price. Fast markets and execution timing can make requotes more likely under execution modes that use them.

What do Trade timeout or Broker is busy mean?

These messages indicate that the trade request was not completed normally within the expected server process. Avoid repeatedly resending the same order until the terminal status and trade history show whether the original request succeeded.

When should I contact the broker or account provider?

Contact the account provider for a disabled account, missing server details, symbol or trading restrictions, account permissions, broker-side execution rules or repeated server errors that continue after the terminal and network are confirmed working.
